liberation theology of noise and improvisation."

'Squaring the Circle: the Finnish Underground' (12.04)
Blossoming in the cold soil of Finland's Tampere since 1995, FONAL has clearly set standards in the underground/independent musical realm of the most recent year.
ES, ISLAJA and KIILA will be inaugurating their European Spring tour at St Giles-in-the-Fields, a Parish church in the heart of London's West End built in the Palladian style in 1734 (find out more about St Giles here)
At the heart of the 'new weird Finlandia' movement, Sami, Marja and their 5 friends will envade the acoustic of the Church with their unique and enchanting warmth which as the tone of the current contemporary Finnish Free-Folk aesthetic. This will be their first appearance in London.

Fonal Records is a Finnish independent record label based in Tampere established by Sami Sänpäkkilä in 1995. The catalogue comprises around 40 releases shifting from ambient, experimental, 'naive pop' to semi-acoustic psychedelic folk with artists including Kemialliset Ystävät, Avarus and Paavoharju. Fonal maintains a strong DIY ethos and aesthetic of being "small and warm" which sees Sänpäkkilä involved in audio engineering, web design, film making and mostly, the Fonal artwork, a rigourously designed three-panel cardboard cover with a black paper seal along with the logo with its braille translation. Fonal is clearly on a road on its own with a unique sense of belonging.
